  • 2 prepared pastry pie dough (for 9-inch rounds)
  • 1/2 cup strawberry pie filling (or your preferred fruit filling)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 large egg (beaten for egg wash)
  • Coarse turbinado sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, mix strawberry pie filling with lemon zest and set aside.
  3. Roll out one pie crust to about 1/8-inch thickness and cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter. Repeat with the second crust.
  4. Brush half of the hearts with beaten egg, place a heaping teaspoon of filling in the center, and cover with another heart shape.
  5. Seal edges using fingers and fork, cut vents on top, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Bake for 12 minutes until golden brown; cool before serving.
