Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (softened for dough + 2 tbsp for filling)
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add eggs, softened butter, flour, and salt; knead until smooth (8–10 minutes). Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. While dough rises, melt butter in a pan over medium heat; add minced garlic and sauté for 2 minutes. Stir in chopped herbs.
  4. Roll out the risen dough into a rectangle; brush with garlic herb butter and sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the top.
  5. Roll the dough tightly into a log; slice it lengthwise to reveal swirls and twist both halves together.
  6. Place twisted dough into a greased baking pan; let rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush with egg wash and bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before slicing.
