Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups cake flour
  • ¼ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 (1-ounce) bottle liquid red food color
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
  • For Cream Cheese Frosting: 12 ounces cream cheese, ¾ cup unsalted butter, 3 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and lining with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a mixer bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Mix in oil, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar. Gradually alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for about 15-20 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For frosting, beat cream cheese until smooth; add butter and mix well. Gradually incorporate powdered sugar and vanilla extract until combined.
  7. Level cooled cakes if needed; layer with frosting in between and cover the top and sides.
